Seeds

The company deals with more than 85 types of crops and currently has 380 varieties on offer for conventional and organic agriculture through to products for home and garden. Around half of the crops are self-reproduced.

Grain and silage maize has been grown in the Schönering maize breeding station (municipality of Wilhering ) in Upper Austria since 1978. The maize hybrids produced using conventional methods are in the FAO 200-350 maturity range. Before they are launched on the market, these are tested for yield, quality and agronomic properties in the European test network ( Community Plant Variety Office ). The new hybrids can be marketed after successfully completing the variety test and including them in the variety list. The trade in maize seeds is regulated in the Plant Variety Protection Act and Seed Law.

For the crops of winter rape , soy and grain there is a breeding cooperation with Saatzucht Donau, in which Saatbau Linz and Probstorfer Saatzucht each hold 50%.

Crop

The field of seed cultivation for crops deals with contract farming, which organizes the contract chain from the farmers to the processors.

Producers, traders and processors are offered help with hedging prices for agricultural raw materials and resources. Saatgut Preisgut deals with business on the international commodity futures exchanges, primarily in the agricultural sector.

history

Herbs & Spices Center in Kefermarkt

Saatbau Linz was created in 1950 through the merger of five individual cooperatives (the seed cooperatives Linz, Freistadt, Otterbach, Arnreit and Wels founded in 1945) with central management and administration in Linz and four branch offices with seed collection and processing. In 1961 the new building of the seed center in Leonding (immediately west of the Linz urban area bordering Linz-Wegscheid ) with a 2,500 t silo room, a seed processing plant and an office building was inaugurated. In 1972 Saatbau Linz entered hybrid maize seed production.

In 1987/88, the Leonding location was expanded; in addition to a container drying plant for maize, seeds and legumes , a high-performance seed processing plant with a silo for 10,800 t was built. With the takeover of OÖ. Kräuterbaugenossenschaft in 1995 Saatbau Linz entered the herbs and spices division. At the turn of the millennium, the joint subsidiary Saatzucht Donau was founded with Probstdorfer Saatzucht , which concentrates the breeding activities of both companies in cereals as well as oil and protein plants; the marketing of the developed varieties continues to be carried out independently by the parent companies.

The inbred line production Center (IPC) in Schönering for the processing of maize inbred lines and corn seed multiplication was built in 2008, on a year in Geinberg a Maisbeizanlage built. 2014 was in Geinberg a new modern Saatmaisanlage with the capacity of about 13,500 t wet, unentlieschtem (still together with the husks , also called husk) piston corn erected a season.
