Saatgut Austria is the association of plant breeders, seed producers and seed traders in Austria. It was founded in 1949, in 2000 the merger took place in the "Association of Plant Breeders and Seed Merchants of Austria", or "Saatgut Österreich" for short. In 2015 the association changed its name to its current name.

The chairman of Saatgut Austria is Michael Gohn (Probstdorfer Saatzucht), his deputies are Johann Blaimauer ( RWA Raiffeisen Ware Austria ), Johann Birschitzky (Saatzucht Donau) and Erich Schwarzenberger (Samen Schwarzenberger).

Saatgut Austria currently has 38 members: 25 companies, three institutions and ten private individuals. The members of Saatgut Austria employ around 1,000 people in total.

Saatgut Austria represents the interests of its members vis-à-vis authorities, institutions and the public. Saatgut Austria itself is represented as a full member of the international associations European Seed Association (ESA) and International Seed Federation (ISF).

Umbrella brand

With the officially recognized "Original Seed", Saatgut Austria supplies Austrian farmers with certified seeds. Under the umbrella brand SAATGUT AUSTRIA, the Austrian seed industry offers seed mixtures for grassland and field forage that are registered with the Federal Office for Food Safety.

Events

Since 1949 the organization has held an annual conference for science, plant breeders, seed producers and consultants in the HBLFA Raumberg-Gumpenstein , at which current topics on plant breeding and seed production are dealt with and discussed. A conference proceedings will be published after each conference.
