from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sabine Blümel (born December 8, 1958 ) is a German local politician (non-party) and administrative specialist . She has been the mayor of the Hanseatic city of Salzwedel ( Saxony-Anhalt ) since March 17, 2016 .

Professional background

Blümel trained in financial administration, is a civil servant and worked in the finance ministry of Saxony-Anhalt.

Political career

Blümel was active in the local council of the village of Tylsen from 1994 and was mayor there from 2000. Blümel has been a member of Salzwedel City Council since 2014.

Blümel ran for office in Salzwedel in the 2015 mayoral election. In the runoff election on March 8, 2015, she defeated the previous mayor Sabine Danicke (non-party) with a majority of only three votes. She was supported in the runoff election by the Salzwedel-Land voter group, the CDU, the SPD and the Free List Für Salzwedel voter association. The validity of the election was contested because of inconsistencies, but a year later it was recognized as valid by court order. Sabine Blümel took up the post of mayor of the Hanseatic city of Salzwedel without any further election on March 17, 2016.

Their declared aim was to consolidate the financial situation of the Hanseatic city of Salzwedel. In order to maintain the city's ability to act, it implemented a multi-stage package of measures together with the city council. This included:

  • the sale of around 1400 hectares of urban forest
  • Disposal of 16,542 Avacon shares
  • the dissolution of the Jeetze landscape renovation
  • as well as the dissolution of the Kultour company and integration into the city administration.

In addition, she applied for three million euros as an interest-free loan from the state.

A petition with 47,638 signatures was submitted against the sale of the city forest. A narrow majority in the city council, however, voted in favor of the mayor's proposal: the city forest was sold to a family interested in hunting who wants to preserve the forest for hunted hunters.

In 2019, Sabine Blümel initiated a petition to reform the Railway Crossing Act . Together with other mayors and district administrators along the 6899 Stendal - Uelzen railway line ( German Unity Transport Project No. 3 ), she calls for an adjustment to the expansion costs in the petition.

"The Railway Crossing Act (EKrG), which originated in the 1960s, obliges the road construction authorities to share one third of the costs of the crossing measures in accordance with Section 13 - regardless of the actual costs of the construction authorities. Accordingly, the road construction authorities are regularly and disproportionately involved in the increasing investment costs involved."
