Saboteur is a semi-cooperative card game for 3 to 10 players, ages 8+ , by Frédéric Moyersoen . It takes about 30 minutes and was published in 2004 by AMIGO Spiel und Freizeit GmbH . The game was published internationally and in several countries in several editions, in 2014 it received a comprehensive addition with Saboteur 2 and in 2016 an independent two-person game under the Tile Saboteur: The Duel was published.

The game is based on a traitor mechanism in which one or more players play against the rest of the players with a common goal, and is similar to games like The Werewolves of Mirkwood or the Temple of Secrets .

Game material

The basic version of the game Saboteur consists of the following game components in addition to the rules:

  • 44 route maps (including 1 start map and 3 destination maps)
  • 24 gold cards
  • 27 action cards
  • 11 dwarf cards (7 dwarves and 4 saboteurs)

The following game components can be added to the Saboteur 2 expansion :

  • 30 route maps
  • 21 action cards
  • 15 dwarf cards (4 blue and 4 green prospectors, 4 saboteurs, 1 boss, 1 profiteer, 1 geologist)
  • 32 gold pieces

Course of the game

At the beginning of the game, depending on the number of players, the dwarf cards are shuffled and distributed to the players - one more card is shuffled than there are other players in order to keep the exact number of roles in the dark. It is now clear what role each player will play. The start and finish cards are laid out seven cards apart and the remaining route cards are shuffled together with the action cards. Now the players get their hand in hand. The remaining cards are placed on a pile next to the playing field. The gold cards are also shuffled and placed next to the field.

The dwarves will try to find the treasure under the three target cards, the saboteurs must prevent this. As soon as the gold treasure has been discovered or the players one after the other have no more cards to play, the game ends and gold is distributed to the winning group (saboteurs or dwarves).

Extensions and successors

In 2014, Saboteur 2 was the first expansion set that was played together with the basic game and supplemented with new cards and gold pieces. The promotional expansion Stollengold , which was also released in 2014 and consists of three cards , enables the player to find more gold pieces in the tunnels. A single promo card titled Saboteur: Selfish Dwarf was also released and issued at the 2016 Saboteur World Championships . The player who receives this card must break the connection between the start card and the destination card himself in order to win.

In 2016 the game Saboteur: Das Duell was released as a standalone game for two people, followed in 2019 with Saboteur: The Lost Mines, a board game version of Saboteur.
