history

The history of Sabsevar goes back to the 1st millennium BC. The fire temple Asarbarsin, which is still visible, is one of the ancient remains.

After the Mongol invasion of Iran, the city was the first part of Iran to approach its freedom under the leadership of the Sarbedaran movement.

In the 14th century, Timur invaded Iran and completely destroyed the city. Contemporary sources mention that 90,000 people were murdered by Timur. After killing all the men in the city, he had their heads cut off and built 3 pyramids from the heads on today's square in Sarberiz (which means "place of heads").

The province of Sabsevar had been lost from the Safavids to the Uzbeks of Transoxania , but was recaptured after a counteroffensive by the Safavids around 1600 together with Herat and Farah .

economy

Sabsevar is the trading center for an agricultural region where grapes are grown. There is a small industry for food processing, copper goods and electric motors. Fresh, dried and preserved fruits and vegetables are exported through the old bazaar of Sabsevar.

Infrastructure

Sabsevar is connected to Tehran and Mashhad by roads. Sabsevar Airport has domestic flights.

education

Sabsevar owns several universities. The Hakim Sabzevari University (HSU) is one of the most prestigious public universities in Iran and the oldest university in the city. The HSU was founded in 1973 when it was called Kar University. After the Iranian Revolution of 1979, this university was closed until 1987. The HSU was re-established under a new name.
