The artificial island Sacca Sessola (also Isola delle Rose ) is located south of the city of Venice in the lagoon on the "Codas di Reziol" - an arm of the Rezzo Canal. The island is 520 meters long and up to 360 meters wide, with an area of 16 hectares . It reaches a height of four meters.

The name "Sacca" indicates that it is an artificial island. Since the island is shaped like a typical Venetian tool called "Sessola", which is used to draw water from a boat, the island is originally called "Sacca Sessola".

No permanent residents were found after the 2001 census.

history

The island was artificially created in the construction of the "Stazione Marittima" from 1860-1870 using material extracted from the excavations and canal depressions. The island was used to store fuel, then it was used for agriculture with vegetable gardens and vineyards. In 1892 the area was converted to be used as a hospital for infectious diseases. Some buildings have been restored for this.

During the cholera epidemic in 1911, a hospital for cholera patients was set up on the island. In 1914 the “San Marco” hospital was inaugurated for the treatment of tuberculosis patients . The hospital remained closed during the First World War, but reopened in 1920. A year later the church was built in neo-Romanesque style.

In 1931 work began on the construction of a new building. Five years later, the specialist clinics “Achille De Giovanni” were opened and finally inaugurated by King Vittorio Emanuele III . The hospital later became one of the most prestigious in Europe in its Mediterranean climate . 440 patients could be admitted. The area included pavilions, a park, thermal power station, shops, workshops, a leisure club with a cinema and a water tower. This is still the distinctive symbol of the island.
However, in 1980 the hospital was permanently closed.

After the island was transferred back to the municipality in 1981, the island was used by the UNESCO International Center for Marine Science and Technology in the 1990s.

In 2000 the island was sold to a multinational company with the aim of converting the area into a hotel complex. In March 2015 the luxury hotel JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa finally opened.
