The Sakhalin stickleback ( Pungitius tymensis ) is a fish that lives primarily in small water bodies and is found on the Russian island of Sakhalin , on the southern Kuril Islands and in some regions of the northern Japanese island of Hokkaidō .

features

The Sakhalin stickleback has a slender body, becomes 7 cm long and is similar in color to the nine-spined stickleback . Usually it has eleven or more (up to 13) dorsal spines, in exceptional cases it can be fewer (at least 8). The dorsal fin is supported by 10 to 11 soft rays, the anal fin has 8 to 12. The pelvic bone (ossa pubis) has receded, the pelvic fin spines and soft rays may be missing. The number of gill rakes is 8 to 11. There are no enlarged scales on the sides of the body. The number of scales around the caudal peduncle is 5 to 8. The caudal fin is rounded. Of the 33 to 35 vertebrae in the species, 14 to 16 are precaudal vertebrae .

distribution and habitat

The Sakhalin stickleback lives in very small bodies of water. Like all sticklebacks, it builds a nest of plant material just above the bottom of the water during spawning time and shows pronounced, sometimes very complex brood care behavior.
