Sadler's Wells (April 11, 1981 - April 26, 2011) was a United States bred thoroughbred racehorse that raced in Europe. It won the 1984 Irish 2000 Guineas, the Eclipse Stakes, and the Phoenix Champion Stakes. It finished second in the Prix du Jockey Club and in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes .
Despite his success on the racetrack, Sadler's Wells is best known for his success as a stallion. He set a new record by becoming sire horse champion 14 times in England and Ireland . He won the title 13 times in a row. At his death he was the father of 323 champions - only Danehill had more winners.
In the middle of the 20th century the most successful European racehorses were exported and placed in the USA, and later also in Japan. Sadler's Wells, however, stayed in Europe.
Licensed sons
Sadler's Wells sired numerous licensed sons, including Galileo and Montjeu (father of the two-time Arc de Triomphe winner Treve ) in Europe and El Prado in the United States, the father of Kitten's Joy , the leading sire in North America in 2013 and 2018.
Galileo is the father of Frankel , Teofilo , New Approach , Nathaniel (father of the two-time Arc de Triomphe winner Enable ) and Camelot .
ancestry
Sadler's Wells is by Northern Dancer, who is considered the most important sire of the 20th century. In his second crop of foals in 1967, Northern Dancer sired Nijinsky II , who not only won the British Triple Crown , but also became an outstanding sire and once won the championship for sire horses in England and Ireland . This made Northern Dancer a very sought-after stallion in the 1970s and 1980s, with offspring selling for millions of dollars.
Sadler's Wells dam was Fairy Bridge, who became Irish two year old mares champion in 1977. Sadler's Wells was her first foal, followed by his full brother Fairy King, who won the 1996 championship for sire horses in France and sired the winners Tate Gallery, Fairy Gold and Puppet Dance. Her last foal was Perugino, from Danzig, who was raised in Australia. Fairy Bridge was the second foal of the mare named Special, who later came from Nureyev, who became champion of sire horses in France twice, as well as the winners Number and Bound, who in turn became successful broodmares.
