The Saga system , also known as Saga Games, SAGA and S A G A, is a German, universal pen & paper role-playing game system originally published by Gessnitzer & Städtler (G & S-Verlag). The first game aids appeared in 1985; the system as volume 10 1991. Several titles were sold over 10,000 times each and are now published in old and new editions by Games-In- Verlag.

In 1993 G&S published DragonSys, the first German-language set of rules for Live Action Role Playing (LARP). Some of these works by SAGA Games Manufactur are also part of the SAGA system, including the set of rules, The Arsenal - The Armory Part 2 or The Book of Costumes. The last regular SAGA books appeared around 1997, including Rasiel's Heilkundebüchlein (Volume 17) and Tractatum Tres-Leon . In 2008 the publishing house Zauberfeder acquired the rights to DragonSys. At the end of 2018, G&S will publish the classic DragonSys books with a new look.

Game system

The system values simple and universal rules. Although it is neutral in terms of game worlds, the developers mainly aimed at DSA players and the fantasy setting Aventuriens . In addition to the normal tables, the books contain comparison tables and other information on compatibility, especially for non-player characters .

In the Saga system, most of the character traits either do not exist or are greatly simplified. The magic system is particularly extensive.

Instead of the usual D20 dice system , Saga mainly uses seven fixed quality levels, later for special skills also higher grades up to 43, which are compared in (combat) trials. The qualities are initially only divided into: not - clumsy - skillful - good , also brilliant in the later ascent . If the character has no special skills for a task, only the basic quality level is used.

The magic system consists of five main branches, which are further divided into branches and leaves. The quality comparison system is also used here.

Innovations

Saga had several innovations that are common these days, including a pointless development and magic system, free development of characters and a limitless magic system that you can work out yourself. Many books are also suitable for your use in LARP.
