The Sahara bee ( Apis mellifera sahariensis ) is a subspecies of the honey bee in North Africa . It lives in particular in oases of the Sahara and has adapted to the real date palm ( Phoenix dactylifera ).

morphology

Apis mellifera sahariensis is similar to the very closely related subspecies Apis mellifera intermissa ( tell bee ), but it has yellow rings on its abdomen. Apis mellifera intermissa , on the other hand, is almost black.

There are only a few pure Saharan bee colonies left, because humans hybridized these bees by importing foreign races.
