Saint-Martin is an underground metro station on lines 8 and 9 of Métro Paris . It has been closed to passenger traffic since September 2, 1939 and is now one of the RATP's ghost stations (“Stations fantômes”) .

location

The station is located lengthways under the Boulevard Saint-Martin on the border of the 3rd  and 10th  arrondissements of Paris . It is located between the transfer stations Strasbourg - Saint-Denis and République .

Surname

It is named after the Boulevard Saint-Martin. Martin was Bishop of Tours in the 4th century . There are various legends about him, including the fact that he parted his coat and gave half to a freezing beggar.

history

The station of line 8 was opened on May 5, 1931, that of line 9 on December 10, 1933. On February 1, 1932 , the acceptance ceremony for the extended line 9, which was officially handed over to the Compagnie du chemin de fer métropolitain de Paris (CMP) on that day, had already taken place there, in the presence of the “father of the Métro” Fulgence Bienvenüe .

At the beginning of the Second World War , the underground station, like 72 others, was closed to passenger traffic. First reopened after the war, it was closed for a second time due to its proximity to the Strasbourg - Saint-Denis transfer station and has been passed through by trains without stopping ever since.

The tracks of line 9 are below those of line 8. Each track has its own platform in a separate tunnel on the outside of the lines. The platforms are each 105 m long, the width of the entire structure is 20.20 m.

To the east of the subway station, a service track branches off from the northern track of line 8 to line 5 , which crosses the northern track of line 9. Then the tracks of line 9 rise to the level of line 8.

Others

Since 1999, part of the underground station has been used as winter accommodation for the homeless, and it has also been used repeatedly for filming and advertising events. In 2010, for example, vehicles from a Japanese automobile company were set up on one of the platforms and presented to passengers as the trains passed through the station in an effective advertising design.
