Saint Ninian's Cave

Saint Ninian's Cave is a sea near cave at the Solway Firth , on the The Machar - Peninsula , about 6.0 kilometers west of Whithorn and the Whithorn Priory in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland .

The small sea cave is believed to be the retreat of Saint Ninian , Scotland's first saint. In the early Middle Ages the cave became a place of pilgrimage .

During an excavation, many Christian symbols were found under the collapsed cave roof, including tombstones and crosses from the 10th and 11th centuries on display at the Priory Museum in Whithorn. In addition, other symbols carved into the rock, especially crosses, have been found inside and outside the cave.

Today the cave is still the destination of annual pilgrimages.
