The Whithorn Priory is a former Premonstratensian in the Scottish village of Whithorn of The Machar in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1972 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. It is also classified as a Scheduled Monument .

history

It is an early Christian site in Scotland that was used as such from the 5th or 6th century. There are graves dated to this period and archaeological evidence suggests that a monastery could be built in the late 6th century. A monastery building from the 8th to 9th centuries is secured. The local tradition names Saint Ninian as the founder of the monastery, whose shrine in the monastery church was a popular pilgrimage destination in the Middle Ages.

description

The ruins of Whithorn Priory on the western edge of Whithorn date from the 12th and 13th centuries. The preserved fragments of the nave and crypt from this period are made of quarry stone and have a Romanesque design. Finely worked stone was only used for extensions, revisions and repairs in the following centuries, which extended into the 20th century. The Ninian shrine is preserved in the crypt, which is still a destination of pilgrimages to this day. Various Scottish kings made pilgrimages to this place over the centuries.

The gateway to the east on Whithorns main road ( A746 ) marks the entrance to the monastery complex. It is classified as a category A single monument. The residential building to the north of 55-57 George Street was built in the later 18th century. The facades of the two-axis building are plastered with Harl . The wide, walled-in doorway leads centrally in a westerly direction. A coat of arms plate is embedded above it.
