The Saint Paul Bridge is a 240 meter long two-lane overpass structure on United Nations Drive , the main artery of the Liberian capital Monrovia . The bridge is located about eight kilometers (as the crow flies) from the historic city center and allows you to cross the St. Paul River on the northern outskirts.

history

From 1945 to 1946, in connection with the construction of the Freeport Monrovia , US pioneer units stationed in Liberia carried out various construction projects for military and civil infrastructure, including the construction of a railway line and the Tubman Bridge and smaller viaducts in the north of the capital Monrovia . Since the 1950s, forest areas north-west of the capital have been developed for the felling of tropical timber and since the 1960s mining areas have been connected to the Freeport with the Mano River Railway and the Bong mine Railway . In the 1970s, a separate two-lane bridge for vehicle traffic was built upstream next to the railway bridge, which is called the St. Paul Bridge to distinguish it. During the civil war , these bridges were particularly hotly contested as they were to stop the advance of the rebel units.
