Sakai Hōitsu ( Japanese 酒井 抱 一 , actually: Sakai Tadanao ( 酒井 忠 因 ); * August 1, 1761 ; † January 4, 1828 ) was a Japanese painter who belongs to the Kōrin school .

Life

Hōitsu was the grandson of Sakai Tadazumi , daimyo of the Himeji fief . He was born in Edo on the Sakai city residence and grew up in elegant surroundings. In 1797 he moved to the priesthood and became a student of Monnyo Shōnin ( 文 如上 人 ), a priest of the Nishi Hongan-ji , who was staying in Edo. Hōitsu rose to the rank of Gon-no- Daisōzu . In 1809 he moved to the Shitaya area of ​​Edo and built a small property there, which he called Uka-an ( 雨 華 庵 ). He now devoted himself entirely to art. He was buried on the grounds of Tsukiji Hongan-ji ( Tokyo ).

Act

Hōitsu was versatile, excelled in calligraphy, wrote Haikai and Kyōka , but he showed his particular strength in painting. Initially, he oriented himself to the Kanō School and the school of the Chinese painter Shin Nanpin , but he dealt with Ukiyo-e . Later he can under the influence of Tani Buncho and took over techniques of the Maruyama and Tosa schools . But above all, he was an admirer of Ogata Kōrin and tried to revive its style.

In 1815, Hōitsu published works by Kōrin and his school under the title "Hundred Leaves of Kōrin" ( 光 琳 百 図 , Kōrin hyakuzu ) and " Summarized painting style of the Ogata style" ( 尾形 流 略 印譜 , Ogata- ryū ryaku impu ). He himself created important works in the decorative style of the Rimpa school. Well-known works are:

The most important student of Hōitsu and probably the last representative of the Kōrin school was Suzuki Kiitsu ( 鈴木 其一 , 1796-1858).
