The Salkehatchie River arises near the town of Barnwell in the state of South Carolina in the southeast of the United States . Before the river joins the Little Salkehatchie River to form the Combahee River , it receives water from Turkey Creek and the Whippy Swamp. The Little Salkehatchie catchment area includes Lemon Creek, Buckhead Creek, and Willow Swamp. The Combahee River flows into the Atlantic Ocean in the Saint Helena Sound .
Various Indian tribes settled on the shore , particularly the Yamasee . The river and the surrounding swamps were later crossed by General Sherman on his way to Columbia , South Carolina during the Civil War .
