Sally Amato

Sally Amato ( Serafina Bellantone ; born September 27, 1917 in New York City , † August 16, 2000 there ) was an American singer and actress.

Serafina Bellantone appeared as a child with her sisters in vaudeville plays in cinema theaters. At a performance at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn , she met Anthony Amato , whom she married two years later. Both worked at the American Theater Wing , where Anthony Amato gave workshops.

In 1948 both opened the Amato Opera , which was supposed to give prospective young singers the opportunity to perform. The first performances took place at Our Lady of Pompeii Church in Greenwich Village; the opera later moved to 159 Bleecker Street and finally in 1963 to the Jewel Box Theater on the corner of Bowery and Second Street.

Her husband acted as artistic director of the opera, while Sally performed under her maiden name as a singer and also acted as a costume designer, lighting technician and ticket seller. Both were inducted into the City Lore's Peoples' Hall of Fame and received awards from the American Cultural Roundtable and the Italian Heritage and Cultural Committee .
