Salome Þorkelsdóttir (German transcription Salome Thorkelsdottir ; born July 3, 1927 in Reykjavík ) is a former Icelandic politician who was the first president of the Althing, which was reformed to a unicameral parliament , between 1991 and 1995 .

biography

Salome Þorkelsdóttir became a member of the Althing for the first time in 1979 and was a member of the House of Lords until 1991. First she was President of the House of Lords from 1983 to 1987 and then until 1988 2nd Vice-President. Subsequently, between 1988 and 1991 she was 1st Vice President of the United Thing from Upper and Lower Houses.

After the dissolution of the bicameral system in 1991, she became a member of the Althing and was its first president from 1991 to 1995. As such, she was also a member of the Collective Vice-Presidency of the Republic, the body that represents the President of Iceland .
