Salterland Bridge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Salterland Bridge is a road bridge between the Scottish cities of Barrhead and Glasgow . The single-lane Salterland Road crosses the River Levern on it, connecting the A736 with the B773 on its way from Glasgow to Irvine . In the immediate vicinity, the Salterland Viaduct leads a railway line over river and road. Since the Levern forms the border river between the Council Areas Glasgow and East Renfrewshire at this point , the bridge is halfway in both countries. In 1992 the Salterland Bridge was added to the Scottish List of Monuments in Category C.

description

The exact construction time of the Salterland Bridge is not recorded, so that only the 18th century can be given as the construction period. The bridge is made of quarry stone and leads over the river in two segment arches made of almost square wedge stones. The narrow roadway has a flat border on both sides made of simple ashlar stones. The bridge piers are equipped with pointed icebreakers .
