Middle arch over the Levern

The Salterland Viaduct is a railway bridge between the Scottish cities of Barrhead and Glasgow . It spans both the Levern River and Salterland Road , which connects the A736 with the B773 on its way from Glasgow to Irvine . In the immediate vicinity, the Salterland Road leads over the Salterland Bridge over the Levern. Since the Levern forms the border river between the Unitary Authoritys Glasgow and East Renfrewshire at this point , the bridge lies in both countries. In 1992 the Salterland Bridge was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B.

description

The bridge was completed in 1847 for the Glasgow, Barrhead and Neilston Direct Railway , which opened that same year. The engineer Neil Robson from Glasgow is responsible for the construction. The bridge consists of a layered masonry of roughly hewn ashlar stones. It is worked in three round arches, one of which spans the Levers and a second the Salterland Road. Since the railway line in the area of the bridge runs in a wide curve, the arches run diagonally to the river and road. The vaulted ceilings are made of brick. Today, among other things, the Glasgow South Western Line of the First ScotRail runs over the bridge. The nearest train stations are Barrhead to the southwest and Nithshill to the east.
