Salvatore Cuffaro (born February 21, 1958 in Raffadali ), also called Totò Cuffaro , is an Italian politician . He is a member of the Unione dei Democratici Cristiani e Democratici di Centro and was President of the Autonomous Region of Sicily from 2001 to 2008 .

On January 18, 2008, Cuffaro was sentenced to five years in prison by a court in Palermo because it was proven that he had supported individual employees of the Mafia or people close to it. He then announced his resignation as President of Sicily on January 26th .

On January 23, 2010, the sentence was extended to 7 years in the second instance. On January 22, 2011, the judgment was made in the third instance (cassazione) and is therefore final. Cuffaro began his custody in the Roman prison Rebibbia on January 23, 2011.

He was serving his sentence and was released on December 13, 2015.
