Hamberg Monastery, south side

The former Salvatorkloster Hamberg is located on the Hamberg above the Inn , near Schardenberg near Passau . It stands on the Austrian side of the border, only a few hundred meters from Bavaria.

history

The monastery was laid out there because, as a result of the Jesuit Law of July 4, 1872, the Jesuits and Jesuit-like orders were not allowed to settle in Germany.

It was founded in 1900 by the Salvatorians , who initially bought a farmhouse for this purpose. Father Eliseus Gebelseder was entrusted with the construction of the actual monastery until 1904. The monastery church was consecrated on November 30, 1904. The monastery became the novitiate house in 1903 . From 1915 to 1926, the novices of the order who studied at the Philosophical-Theological College in Passau were housed here . After the Jesuit Law was repealed in 1917 and Jesuits and Jesuit-like orders were allowed to settle in Germany again, the Salvatorians acquired a Benedictine monastery in Passau (Passau-Klosterberg) in 1925 , in which the theology students of the order lived from 1931. The Hamberg Salvatorkloster lost its importance. From then on it was used for the formation of lay brothers and for extraordinary pastoral care. From 1939 to 1945 it was confiscated as a reserve hospital. The fathers were allowed to stay in the house.

The building has been a student residence since the 1980s. A wing was added to the monastery building. The former monastery church has been completely cleared out inside and converted into a weight room.
