The Salvin screech owl ( Megascops ingens ) is a species from the family of real owls. It occurs in two subspecies exclusively in South America.

Appearance

With a body size of about 25 to 28 centimeters, the Salvin screech owl is a large species within its genus. The feather ears are relatively small and yellow-brown. The top of the body is reddish brown to dark brown with darker mottling. The face veil is ocher to pale brown. A conspicuous, dark border of the facial veil, as it is often found in other owl species, is missing in the Salvin screech owl. The legs are feathered down to the toes.

It can be confused with the Colombian screech owl , which is the same size as the Salvin owl. In this screech owl, however, the lower part of the barrel is not feathered. In addition, their eyes are dark brown. The cinnamon screech owl resembles the Salvin screech owl in appearance, but is 15 percent smaller. The cloud forest screech owl is drawn more conspicuously on the underside of the body and the white-throated screech owl lacks feather ears.

distribution and habitat

The distribution areas of the Salvin Screech Owl are the eastern slopes of the Andes from Venezuela to Ecuador, Peru and the north of Bolivia. The Salvin screech owl is a resident bird. It inhabits moist forests with a large number of epiphytes. The height distribution ranges from 1,200 meters to 2,500 meters above sea level.

Way of life

The Salvin screech owl is exclusively nocturnal. It transmits between epiphytes on thick branches and is often located near the tree trunk. The diet consists of insects and spiders as well as smaller vertebrates. It probably breeds in tree hollows. Otherwise, their reproductive biology is largely unexplored.

Systematics

Their relationship to the other screech owl species is largely unexplored. Presumably it is closely related to the Colombia screech owl, the cloud forest screech owl and the cinnamon screech owl.
