Salwa Bughaigis

Salwa al-Bughaigis (born April 24, 1963 in Benghazi ; † June 25, 2014 there ) was a Libyan lawyer and human rights activist .

Under the regime of Muammar al-Gaddafi , Bughaigis represented political prisoners as a lawyer. In 2011 she organized the first demonstrations against Gaddafi in the east Libyan city of Benghazi. After the fall of Gaddafi, she became a member of the National Transitional Council , but left this body after four months in protest at the low percentage of women. In June 2014, she was shot in the head by strangers at her home in Benghazi and died in hospital from gunshot wounds.
