Salwey Winnington

Salwey Winnington (* 1666 ; † November 6, 1736 ) was a British politician.

Life

Salwey Winnington was the eldest son of Francis Winnington and his second wife Elizabeth (nee Salwey). He had three brothers, including Edward Jeffreys , and two sisters. The later MP Francis Winnington was a son of his brother Francis.

When the MP Henry Herbert was raised to Baron Herbert of Chirbury in 1694 and thus left the House of Commons , Winnington ran for election in the Bewdley constituency. Winnington was a member of the House of Commons from November 19, 1694 to 1708. In the 1708 elections he was defeated by Henry Herbert , son of Henry Herbert, 1st Baron Herbert of Chirbury and long-standing rival for Winnington's parliamentary seat. When Herbert succeeded his father as 2nd Baron Herbert of Chirbury in 1709, Winnington did not stand for by-election. He did not resume until 1710 in the Bewdley constituency, but was defeated by Anthony Lechmere . As in the 1708 election, Winnington appealed against the choice of his opponent. Unlike 1708, however, he was successful this time and was again a member of the House of Commons in December 1710. He belonged to this until his election defeat in 1715. Winnington now withdrew from politics.

On July 24, 1690 he married Anne Foley, the daughter of Thomas Foley. Out of it three sons and five daughters were born. His son Thomas later also became a member of parliament.
