The Salzstadtkeiler Lüneburg , active from 1997 to 2016 as Salt City Boars Lüneburg , are an inline skater hockey club from the Hanseatic city of Lüneburg and play in the third-class Regionalliga Nord of the ISHD ( Inline Skaterhockey Germany ) of the DRIV ( German Rolling Sports and Inline Association ).

The team was founded in 1997 as a department in VfL Lüneburg e. V. , the second largest popular sports club in Lüneburg .

The name Salzstadtkeiler is derived from the historical tradition of the discovery of salt in Lüneburg, which is said to have been discovered by a brook (see Lüneburg city history ).

In the 2017 season, over 50 athletes play in the two men's teams and two youth teams.

history

Dolphins, Devils and Wikingsmile: The 1990s

In the mid to late 1990s, several teams played inline skater hockey and inline street hockey in and around Lüneburg. In particular, it was the teams of Dolphins and Devils (both belonging to VfL Lüneburg) and Wiking Smile Gellersen (belonging to TSV Gellersen). The first few years were played as a hobby in various public areas or in the underground car park of an electronics retailer in Lüneburg. In order to join forces, the Dolphins and Devils merged in 1997 and formed the Salzstadtkeiler Lüneburg, then under Salt City Boars Lüneburg .

Start of game operations in the Association of DIV: 1998 to 2003

Around the turn of the millennium, the clubs in the north were better organized and started playing for the first time in the newly founded Inline Street Hockey League of the DIV (Deutscher Inline-Skate Verband e.V.) in the north. In order to reduce the effort, the game days within this league, which expanded from Kiel to Kassel, were mostly organized in tournament form. Other highlights during this time were the participation in open tournaments, in which a large number of tournament victories could be achieved.

Over time, the direction of the sport became more and more professional, so ambitions, the level of gaming and also the successes increased. The highlight was the German runner-up in 2003 after losing in an exciting final against their eternal rival Bissendorfer Panther .

Merger with Wiking Smile Gellersen, switch to ISHD gaming operations: since 2004

In 2004 they switched to ISHD gaming operations, and at the same time they merged with Wiking Smile Gellersen. The Salzstadtkeiler remained the last inline skater hockey club in Lüneburg.

Establishment in the national leagues (2004–2014)

The Salzstadtkeiler had to start in 2004 in the third-class Regionalliga Nord-Ost, in which they became the undisputed champions with 14 wins from 14 games. With that the direct promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga North was assured. And also in the premiere season 2005 in the 2nd Bundesliga North, the Keiler exceeded all expectations: with only two points loss, they became runner-up and thus made it to the 1st Bundesliga North.

While they managed to stay up in the 2006 season by winning the play-downs against the Langenfeld Devils, in 2007 they were relegated from bottom of the table in the 2nd Bundesliga North. Once there, however, in 2008 the runner-up in the 2nd Bundesliga North made it clear that they were promoted to the 1st Bundesliga North. 2009 and 2010 marked the last first-class years of the Salzstadtkeiler: Both seasons were finished penultimate in the table, in 2010 they couldn't stay up and were relegated again to the 2nd Bundesliga North.

In 2011 they finished third in the 2nd Bundesliga North, and in 2012 and 2013 they were runner-up.

The last Bundesliga year of the Keiler was 2014: After the season was confidently finished in third place, the decision was made to voluntarily relegate to the third-tier Regionalliga Nord.

Regionalliga Nord (since 2015)

In the two seasons since their voluntary relegation, the boar continued to impress in terms of sport. In 2015 they had to admit defeat behind the champions of the Bremerhaven Whales with a point difference , in 2016 it was much closer: an exciting finale at the end of the season went 8: 2 to the Bremerhaven team, who won the direct comparison against the Lüneburgers with one goal and thus placed 1 and were able to make clear the second championship in a row. The “final game” 2016 was broadcast live by sprade.tv and has meanwhile been followed by over 1,500 people.

The 2017 season marked the 20th anniversary of the salt town boar. As a result of this, a comprehensive rebranding was created in which the keilers were given a new logo, jerseys, design and website.

In the 2017 season, the Keiler are again on the hunt for points in the Regionalliga Nord.
