Sam Durant

Sam Durant (* 1961 in Seattle ) is an American sculptor and installation artist .

life and work

Durant studied at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston and received his Master of Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia . He teaches at the California Institute of the Arts.

“Since the mid-1990s, Sam Durant's work has centered on American history - its monuments , national myths and abysses as well as its various countercultures and protest movements - a theme that the artist explores in sculptures, drawings, sound works and mixed media installations. “Well-known works by Durant are Altamont Raceway (1999), Proposal for White and Indian Dead Monument Transpositions (2005), Scaffold (2012), exhibited at dOCUMENTA (13) and Proposal for Public Fountain (2015).
