Sam Sweeney (born February 27, 1989 in Nottingham ) is a multi-instrumental English folk musician.

Career

Sam Sweeney began playing the violin at the age of six and began performing as a soloist at folk festivals in 2001 . From 2002 to 2010 Sweeney was a member of the folk band Kerfuffle , in which he played fiddle and cajón . After Kerfuffle broke up , Sam Sweeney performed with accordionist and singer Hannah James in the duo Hannah James and Sam Sweeney .

Since 2010 at the latest, Sweeney has also been a member of the award-winning folk band Bellowhead , in which he played the fiddle, bagpipes , viola and other instruments. In 2010 he performed with Jon Boden and the Remnant Kings .

He is also a member of the band of folk singer Fay Hield , originally known as the Fay Hield Trio , but since 2012 with a new, expanded line-up called Fay Hield & The Hurricane Party .

Awards

Sweeney has received a number of awards including the In The Tradition award and the Wiltshire Folk Association Young Folk Award , which he received twice in a row. He was nominated for the 2004 BBC Young Folk Awards . In 2007 he won one of the five BBC Performing Arts Fund grants that helped him kick off his musical career. Sweeney was also nominated for Musician of the Year at the 2013 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards , which he received in 2015.
