history

SJS bond, 1899

The steam tram company was founded on March 18, 1881 by JF Dijkman, W. Walker and GH Clifford and started operating on September 28, 1881. On the basis of concessions from the colonial government of the Dutch East Indies of December 1, 1879, the aim was to connect Semarang with Kudus and Pati via a railway line.

The first director of the company was Baron Henri Maarten Anton van der Goes van Dirxland (born November 30, 1841 in 's-Gravenhage ; † January 29, 1890), who had also been director of Oost-Java Stoomtram Maatschappij since June 7, 1888 was. He was assisted in running his company from November 1881 to April 1886 by a council secretary named CLJ Martens.

The most important station was the Jurnatan Station , which was also called Semarang-Centraal or Djoernatan. In 1913 it was expanded from a small tram stop to a large train station. It was not included in the list of listed railway stations in Indonesia in 1950 and was taken out of service in 1974.

Nationalization and decommissioning

Due to Government Decree No. 40 of the Republic of Indonesia from 1959, issued under President Sukarno , all steam and tram lines that were previously operated by Dutch companies were nationalized and their operation was transferred to Djawatan Kereta Api (DKA).

The SJS-Bahn continued to operate under the DKA and PNKA until the golden age of the PJKA in the 1970s. In 1975 the Kudus – Bakalan and Juwana – Tayu lines were shut down. The Cepu Kota – Rembang line was closed in 1984. In 1986 the Kemijen – Rembang and Purwodadi – Ngemplak lines were closed. The Rembang – Jatirogo line was closed in 1992. The last SJS lines, Blora – Demak and Wirosari – Kradenan, were closed in 1996. Most of the tracks have not yet been dismantled, but there are no concrete plans for reactivation.
