Samer Issawi

Samer Tariq Issawi (born December 16, 1979 in Issawiyeh , northeast of Jerusalem ) is a Palestinian and a member of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine .

Life

On April 15, 2002 he was arrested by the Israeli army in Ramallah during the invasion of several cities in the West Bank by "Operation Defensive Shield". Samer was charged with possessing weapons and forming military groups in Jerusalem, for which he was sentenced to 26 years in prison.

Almost ten years later, in October 2011, Samer and 1,027 Palestinian prisoners were released in return for the return of Israeli Gilad Shalit as part of an Egypt-brokered agreement between Hamas and the Israeli government . On July 7, 2012, he was arrested again for violating the terms of his release. Samer was sentenced to 8 months' imprisonment, which includes a possible restoration of his original 26 year sentence.

On August 1, 2012, Issawi went on a hunger strike. On January 7, 2013, a protest organized by Palestinian activist Hala Numan was held in Washington, DC in support of Issawi. Mahmoud Abbas , President of the Palestinian Authority, tries to raise awareness about the condition of Samer Issawi and three other prisoners who have gone on hunger strike through a letter to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and a publicity campaign that began in February 2013 . that they are in an Israeli prison without conviction to protest.

In December 2013, Israel announced that it would release Samer Issawi from custody.
