Samia Suluhu Hassan (born January 27, 1960 in the Sultanate of Zanzibar ) is a Tanzanian politician ( CCM ). She was a member of the National Assembly and Minister of State for Union Affairs. Since 2015 she has been the first female Vice President of Tanzania together with President John Magufuli .

Life

Youth and education

Samia Hassan Hassan was born on January 27, 1960 in the then independent Sultanate of Zanzibar. After finishing school in 1977, Hassan began working as a secretary in the Ministry of Planning and Development. At the same time, she attended some certification courses until she received an advanced diploma in public administration in 1986 at the Institute of Development Management (now Mzumbe University ). From 1985 to 1997 Hassan worked for the World Food Program .

From 1992 to 1994 Hassan studied at the University of Manchester and graduated with a postgraduate diplomat in economics. In 2015 she did a Master of Science in Community Economic Development as part of a university partnership between the Open University of Tanzania and Southern New Hampshire University .

Political career

As early as 1987, Hassan became a member of what was then the unity party CCM. But it was not until 2000 that she decided to become politically active and ran for one of the “Special Sets” reserved for women in the House of Representatives of the semi-autonomous state of Zanzibar ( Zanzibar House of Representatives ). She was appointed Minister for Labor, Gender Equality and Children by Zanzibari President Amani Karume . In 2005 she was re-elected and reappointed as Zanzibari Minister, but changed portfolios and became Minister of Tourism, Trade and Investment.

In 2010 she ran in the national parliamentary elections for the Tanzanian National Assembly in the Makunduchi constituency , which she won with more than 80 percent of the votes. President Jakaya Kikwete then appointed her Minister of State for Union Affairs. In 2014 she was elected Vice-Chair of the committee responsible for drafting a new constitution.

In July 2015, the CCM's presidential candidate, John Magufuli , selected Hassan to run with her for the office of president and vice-president. She was the first female candidate ( running mate ) for the post. After the CCM won the election, Hassan became Tanzania's first female vice-president.

Private

Samia Hassan married her husband Hafidh Ameir in 1978. With this she has four children. The second child, Wanu Hafidh Ameir (* 1982) is a member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives.
