Samia canningi is a butterfly (moth) from the family of the peacock moth(Saturniidae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 10 to 14 centimeters. The wings are colored brown to golden brown and have the white eye-spots on the wings that are typical of the Samia genus .

The caterpillars are white to pale green and have black warts on their backs.

Samia canningi is mainly found in Southeast Asia and China .

biology

Before hatching, the yellowish white eggs turn bluish black. The caterpillars feed on the tree of gods ( Ailanthus altissima ) in nature , but also on privet ( Ligustrum ), lilac ( Syringa ) and laurel cherry ( Prunus laurocerasus ) in breeding .

Like all other peacock moths, they spin a cocoon of silk. Like all Saturniids, the moths only live one to two weeks because they cannot eat.
