Samuel Enderby (* 1640 ; † 1723 in London , England ) was a British entrepreneur and trader based in London.

Life

Little is known about Samuel Enderby , the grandfather of Samuel Enderby (1719–1797) and founder of the London whaling company Samuel Enderby & Sons . He lived with his family, the Gerber exercised crafts, in London's Bermondsay . His parents must have originally lived in Ireland , as properties in Lismore , County Waterford , which were returned to the Enderby's , were sold in 1660 . Samuel Enderby took the money and invested it in trading whale oil and trading furs from Russia . His son Daniel later continued the business on St Paul's Wharf . In addition to the family business of Enderby's , two other trading companies established themselves on St Paul's Wharf that specialized in oil and oil, Charles Buxton's company and Sims .
