Samuel P. Ferguson

Samuel P. Ferguson is an American mathematician . He is known for his contribution to the proof of the Kepler Conjecture with Thomas C. Hales .

Ferguson in 1991 received his Bachelor Accounts in mathematics from Brigham Young University and in 1997 at the University of Michigan at Thomas C. Hales doctorate ( Sphere packings V ). He then worked for the National Security Agency .

Part of his dissertation was his contribution to solving the Kepler conjecture about packing of spheres. Hales had broken down the problem into around 5,000 individual cases of packing of spheres. He assigned the most difficult of these problems to Ferguson as a doctoral thesis ( pentahedral prism ). Ferguson also wrote much of the computer code that was essential to solving the problem and optimized the algorithms.

In 2009 he received the Fulkerson Prize with Hales .
