Samuel Tribolet (around 1650)

Samuel Tribolet (born December 15, 1616 in Bern , † 1673 ibid) was a Bernese magistrate.

Life

Samuel Tribolet, son of the magistrate Johannes Tribolet and Anna Tschiffeli, married Ursula von Graffenried, daughter of the future mayor Anton von Graffenried (II.) In 1641 . In 1645 he became a member of the Grand Council of the City of Bern, and from 1649 to 1654 he served as Governor of Trachselwald. His term of office was marked by embezzlement of fines, extortion of subjects due to excessive fines and damage to delinquents through long prison sentences. Because of his offenses, the Bernese councilors, especially the then Venner Samuel Frisching , saw him as one of the main causes of the Swiss Peasants' War . The Bernese authorities excluded him from the Grand Council in 1654, sentenced him to a fine and expelled him from the country for three years. In 1656, due to his services in the First Battle of Villmergen and the intercession of his father-in-law, he was able to take a seat again in the Grand Council. From 1663 to 1665 he was governor of Baden and from 1666 to 1667 governor of Avenches. After renewed blackmail, he was deposed as such in 1667.
