The San Salvatore Railway (MS) ( Italian Funicolare Monte San Salvatore ) is a meter-gauge funicular railway located in the Swiss canton of Ticino and leads from Paradiso TI to Monte San Salvatore .

Location and dates

The cable car, whose valley station is in the Lugano suburb of Paradiso at 282  m above sea level. M. is located, drives with a maximum gradient of 61 percent in 12 minutes to the summit. After 1629 meters you reach the mountain station at 883  m above sea level. M.

The facility was built in two separate sections, each with a car, so passengers have to change trains at the Pazzallo intermediate station . The drives for both track sections are also located here.

The San Salvatore Railway is in operation every half hour from mid-March to mid-November.

history

The San Salvatore railway was built by the Bell machine works in Kriens on behalf of Bucher-Durrer ( Franz Josef Bucher and Josef Durrer ) . The construction work began on June 12, 1888, the inauguration took place on March 27, 1890. The electric drive for funicular railways was still an exception at that time, in Switzerland it was only used by the Bürgenstock Railway and Stanserhorn Railway .

In 1926 the traction system was converted and the second generation of rolling stock was put into operation. Further modifications took place in 1957 (third generation of cars) and 2001 (total renewal of the systems including drive, fourth generation of cars with panoramic roofs).

By April 2006, the train had carried 16 million passengers to the summit of Monte San Salvatore.
