Museum tour

SanGimignano1300

The tour is divided into ten different exhibition areas. Among other things, the medieval pilgrimage route, better known as the “ Via Francigena ”, is explained in detail. You will also find a great reproduction of the town of San Gimignano as it was in the 13th century, on a scale of 1: 100, entirely hand-modeled in painted terracotta . In some showcases you can see hand-made sculptures (detailed replicas) that depict medieval city and country life and the professions and handicrafts of that time.

A three-dimensional replica of some details of the famous fresco by the artist Memmo di Filipuccio , which he realized in the “Palazzo del Podestà” in San Gimignano at the beginning of the fourteenth century, is of great artistic value . With this painting Filippuccio gave a detailed insight into the society of the free city of San Gimignano.

Testimoni del Tempo (contemporary witnesses)

The replica of the monastery of St. Francis, which stood outside the city walls of San Gimignano and was completely destroyed in the 16th century in order to be able to further expand the fortifications of the city, was inaugurated in January 2011. The historical tour is completed by a series of watercolors, created by Enrico Guerrini, depicting important historical events in the region and the city of San Gimignano, from the Etruscans to the present day.

Awards

In 2011, the Italian Commission for UNESCO placed the museum under the protection of UNESCO as a " World Heritage Site " in recognition of the high educational value of the educational and cultural offerings.
