San Andres is a pre-Columbian Maya -Stätte in the province of La Libertad in El Salvador .

The originally small Maya village is located in the Zapotitán Valley and was founded around 900 BC. Built in BC. After an eruption of the nearby Ilopango volcano in 250 BC. And the ensuing devastation, the village was abandoned. It was not until around AD 400 that it was repopulated and San Andrés developed into an important city in the region and even became a regional capital of the Maya around AD 600.

San Andrés maintained trade connections with other important Mayan cities such as Copán , Tikal and Caracol .

The city began to decline in the 10th century, and it was finally abandoned around AD 1200.

It is believed that around 12,000 people lived in the city during its heyday. Today you can visit a restored pyramid with two terraces in San Andrés.
