San Juanito ( Spanish Isla San Juanito , the diminutive of San Juan ) is the northernmost island of the Mexican Islas Marías in the eastern Pacific Ocean . Administratively it belongs to the municipality of San Blas in the state of Nayarit .
geography
San Juanito is located about 70 km off the west coast of Mexico in the extreme north of the Islas Marías, about 5 km north of María Madre , the largest island in the archipelago. The uninhabited island is around 5 km long, up to 2.6 km wide and has an area of 9.105 km². This makes it the smallest of the four main islands, but there are still five cliffs in the archipelago with a much smaller area.
Animal world (fauna)
In contrast to María Madre and María Magdalena, the Tres Marias deer vole ( Peromyscus madrensis ), which is endemic to the Islas Marías, occurs frequently on San Juanito, as the island is free of introduced rats .
