Max Syrbe

Max Syrbe (born March 2, 1929 in Leipzig ; † September 21, 2011 in Karlsruhe ) was a German physicist and former president of the Fraunhofer Society .

Life

Max Syrbe attended the Königin-Carola-Gymnasium in his hometown . He studied physics in Frankfurt am Main and received his doctorate in applied physics and control engineering in 1953 . He then began his industrial career as a development and project engineer at BBC in Mannheim. In 1964 he took over the chairmanship of the Institute for Vibration Research (ISF). In 1968 he left the BBC and joined ISF, which was relocated to Karlsruhe, now the Fraunhofer Institute for Optronics, System Technology and Image Exploitation , as director. In 1971 Max Syrbe was elected deputy chairman of the main commission of the Fraunhofer Society. It is thanks to his initiative that a concept for research and expansion planning was developed, which provided the basis for the further development of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. He represented success-dependent contract research for industry and the public sector as a suitable basis for the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in its capacity as the supporting organization for applied research in Germany. In 1983 the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft elected him President, an office he held until 1993. In 1975 he was appointed honorary professor by the Faculty of Computer Science at the University of Karlsruhe (TH) .

He was a member of the board of directors / executive committees of the VDI , the INTERKAMA working group , the VDI / VDE Society for Measurement and Control Engineering and the Society for Computer Science . He served on corporate boards, expert panels and advisory boards to promote science, technology and innovation.

Honors

Syrbe was elected chairman of the board of trustees of the Steinbeis Foundation and later became honorary senator of the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg .
