San Telmo Island (sometimes just Telmo Island ) is a small island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . Off the north coast of Livingston Island , it forms the western boundary of Shirreff Cove .
The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1958 after the Spanish ship San Telmo from Cádiz , which, under Captain Joaquín de Toledo, was part of a four-ship formation in 1819 in Drake Street and was finally left to its fate. In 1821 seal hunters found remains of the ship on neighboring Half Moon Beach .
