The Marienbasilika ( Hungarian Kisboldogasszony-bazilika ) is a Roman Catholic church in Máriaremete (German: Maria-Einsiedel) on the western edge of Budapest , Hungary . The church of the Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest is consecrated under the patronage of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and has the title of a minor basilica .

History of the pilgrimage

After the destruction and depopulation around Buda due to the 150-year Turkish occupation, around 1,700 foreign families were recruited into the country, including German families from the Black Forest. According to the story, Katalin Thalwieser brought a picture of the Virgin from the Einsiedeln monastery and hung it in an ash tree in the forest. A pilgrimage developed from the first prayers. After a wooden chapel from 1783, a stone chapel with 300 seats was built in 1828 and the picture was shown there.

Church building

The Maria-Einsiedel church building association was founded in 1875. The construction plan was drawn up by Ferenc Schönner and Alajos Hauszmann, the execution was supervised by the builder Sándor Hauszmann. The 100,000 forints were financed by the municipality without the diocese. The church was consecrated on October 1, 1899 by Fülöp Steiner , the bishop of Székesfehérvár , Nándor Wolafka and Mihály Bogisich in the presence of numerous clergymen and around ten thousand believers. Pope John Paul II elevated the church to a minor basilica in 1991 .

The single-nave, neo-Gothic church has an area of ​​700 square meters with a length of 44 meters and a width of 15 meters. The height is fifteen meters, the tower is 54 meters high. The lower choir is closed by a three-sided apse. The bells were melted down during World War I and replaced in 1924. The organ of the pilgrimage church comes from the now no longer preserved royal chapel of the Buda Castle as a gift from Emperor Franz Joseph and Queen Elisabeth . This organ was built by Gergely Ferenc from Nándor Gonda.

In 1959 the main altar was erected on the occasion of the Marian year. The church in its present form was designed in 1964 by Albréd Bardon. The retable was made in 1968. László Papp and his son (1960) painted the church based on the paintings by István Takács. The theme is the veneration of the Virgin Mother in Heaven by the Hungarian people. There are numerous votive tablets in the entrance area of ​​the pilgrimage basilica. To the left of the entrance is a statue of St. Emmerich .
