Sancta Maria in Paradyso
The Sancta Maria monastery in Paradyso (also: Klosterruine Riederberg or Sankt Laurentius im Paradies ) is a ruined monastery in the Lower Austrian Vienna Woods near Sieghartskirchen , on the edge of the municipality of Tullnerbach .
history
A St. Laurentius Church was mentioned several times as early as the 14th century. Gabriel von Verona, then Vicar of the Austrian Order Province, founded a Franciscan observant monastery on the site after a donation by the Habsburgs around 1440, according to other sources after 1460 . The single-nave, late Gothic church was dedicated to the Mother of God and St. Laurentius and was rebuilt after a fire in 1509. On September 26, 1529, the Turks destroyed the monastery with the church, killing 18 friars. Both the church and the monastery were not rebuilt.
description
Structural remains of the nave and small remains of the choir of the former monastery church have been preserved above ground. The nave was provided with a three-bay brick vault, of which parts of the vault attachments are still preserved. Assumptions about a possible polygonal choir closure were refuted by an excavation in 2013. Presumably a round apse was added to the choir in a modern construction phase , as can be seen in the construction joints. In the area of the west portal, at least two construction phases of a west gallery can be seen in the form of beam holes and subsequently made recesses for a vault. In the course of the excavation mentioned, two octagonal pillars of the west gallery made of sandstone and parts of a brick floor in a spicatum pattern were uncovered. In a picture in the so-called Kronprinzenwerk from 1888, remnants of the employed two-story monastery building can still be seen on the northwest corner of the nave. To the east of the monastery church, small remains of a rectangular outbuilding can be seen. On the steep slope to the west of the nave there is a substructure and the remains of a buttress .
