The Sanctuary Islands (English for refuge islands ) are a group of small islands off the Graham coast of Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula . They are located 800 m southwest of the Link Stack just off the west coast of Chavez Island .
Participants in the British Graham Land Expedition (1934–1937) led by British polar explorer John Rymill mapped it for the first time. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named them in 1959 because the islands offered, among other things, a sheltered storage area for the dog sled teams of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey , who had explored the area from Prospect Point in 1957 .
