The sea buckthorn Astarte ( Goodallia triangularis ) is a shell -Art from the family of Astarte (Astartidae).

features

The even-folding, very small housings are approximately triangular in outline with a maximum height of 3.5 millimeters, usually only 1.5 to 3 millimeters. They are a little taller than they are wide; the width is about 90% of the height. Juvenile cases are slightly more rounded. The vertebra lies behind the middle and is twisted forward. The posterior dorsal margin drops off steeply, the anterior dorsal margin is flatter and straight to slightly convex. Front and rear ends are well rounded, the ventral margin is deeply convex. The ligament is external and very short and narrow. The heart-shaped lunula is only indistinctly pronounced. Even the lanceolate area has only indistinct edges. The lock is a robust lock plate with two massive, blunt cardinal teeth in the right flap; the front tooth is wide, the back tooth narrow. The left valve also has two cardinal teeth. The right valve has a longitudinal lamella on the posterior dorsal margin. In the left valve, this longitudinal lamella is located on the anterior dorsal margin. The inner edge of juvenile specimens is generally smooth, in adult specimens it can be smooth or serrated.

The silky, shiny surface is almost smooth apart from very fine concentric growth strips and somewhat coarser lines that mark growth interruptions. Small pits can also be seen at higher magnifications. The periostracum is whitish, yellowish to brownish or orange. The thickness of the whitish to yellowish skin varies, but it is solid.

The anterior and posterior sphincter impression are approximately the same size. The surface line is entire and not indented.

The Prodissoconch is clearly distinguishable into a Prodissoconch I and II. The Prodissoconch I is D-shaped, 160 to 180 µm long. The Prodissonch II has a diameter of 180 to 220 µm. On the Prodissoconch I there is a grainy ornamentation that is missing on the Prodissoconch II.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The range of the species extends from the North Sea to Morocco and the Mediterranean Sea . They occur from about five to 600 meters water depth.

The mussels live buried flat on sandy soils, gravel or broken shells.

Taxonomy

The taxon was scientifically described by Montagu in 1803 as Mactra triangularis . It is the type species of the genus Goodallia Turton, 1822. The taxon is also found in the literature as Astarte triangularis , Mactra triangularis and Tridonta triangularis . Mactra minutissima Montagu, 1803 and Mactra subtrigona Wood, 1841 are more recent synonyms .
