The Sandersville Railroad ( AAR reporting mark: SAN) is a Local Railroad - Railway Company in the US -Bundesstaat Georgia in Washington County . The company operates a 12-kilometer route from Tennille via Sandersville to kaolin. The company is based in Sandersville.

history

The company was founded on September 18, 1893. The owners, business people from Sandersville, tried to break the monopoly of the Augusta Southern Railroad in connecting the city to the rail network. The company was supported by the Central of Georgia Railroad (CofG), as this also reached the city with it. In Tennille the connection to the network of the CofG (now Norfolk Southern Railway ) was made. The Sandersville Railroad owned the line and the structures and rented the necessary rolling stock from the Central of Georgia.

In 1916, Ben Tarbutton acquired the company. The Sandersville Railroad is still owned by the Tarbutton family today. In 1938 the Champion Paper and Fiber Co. was looking for a new production facility for its kaolin production. The choice fell on Sandersville. In the following years, other kaolin companies settled in Sandersville. In 1957, the Sandersville Railroad extended the line to Kaolin to connect a newly built Georgia Kaolin plant (now Imerys Pigments and Additives) to the rail network.

The most important cargo is kaolin. In addition, mainly wood products are transported. Freight wagons are leased through the subsidiary Sandersville Leasing, Inc. To broaden the business base, the company also owns several industrial and commercial estates in the Sandersville area.

Vehicle fleet

The vehicle fleet consists of four EMD SW 1500, one EMD SW 1200 and two slugs .
