Sand surface method

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The sand surface method (also known as the sand patch method or sand patch text ) is a volumetric method for determining the roughness or texture of a surface with the help of quartz sand . It is also known as the Kaufmann method after its inventor N. Kaufmann .

The method is used, for example, to record and assess the condition of traffic areas in road construction or to test the substrate adhesion for coatings during concrete repairs (so-called surface protection systems ).

Procedure

The aim of the sand surface method is to determine the mean roughness of the surface to be tested. For this purpose, a certain volume of quartz sand (e.g. 25 cm³ or 50 cm³) is poured onto the surface and distributed in a circle without pressure until the depressions in the surface are just filled. The mean surface roughness can be calculated from the diameter of the sand surface :

With:
- mean surface roughness in mm
- Volume of the distributed sand in cm³
- Diameter of the sand surface in cm

Advantages and disadvantages

The advantage of the sand surface method is that it can be carried out quickly and easily without special testing equipment.

The disadvantage is that the surface may only be slightly inclined. A implementation on walls or overhead is not possible, so that the process z. B. is only applicable to a limited extent in concrete repair. In addition, the result depends heavily on the examiner.
