Sandow is a music band that was founded in 1982 in Cottbus . It is named after the Cottbus district of the same name. Sandow became known, among other things, through his participation in the GDR documentary whispering & screaming - a rock report .
The band's alternative and experimental music shaped the time of transition for a youthful subculture in the GDR . The song Born in the GDR , which referred to Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA , and a concert by various western rock bands with 120,000 visitors in East Berlin stood out. The song was partially interpreted as a hymn of praise for the GDR state, but according to the band members it was intended as a parody. The band later refused to play the song at their concerts due to the misunderstanding. It was not until 1998 that a new version that emphasized the irony of the text was taken back to the stage program. This version can also be found on the 1997 Sandow CD BORN ; the original version was also included on the sampler Pop 2000 - 50 Years of Pop Music .
Due to personal upheavals, Sandow broke up in late 1999.
In 2005 Kai-Uwe Kohlschmidt , Tilman Fürstenau, Lars Neugebauer and Chris Hinze announced the founding of the band, two years later the album Kiong - companions of love was released and the first appearances followed in the new line-up. In 2010 ZAP and Lars Neugebauer left Sandow and Tilman Berg returned as a drummer.
