The Art is a band that emerged from the predecessor band Die Zucht in Leipzig in 1985 and is one of the other bands that shaped the musical revolution in the GDR . Characteristic for Die Art is the gloomy, melancholic lyric paired with punk and guitar rocksound , sometimes also dark wave . The lyrics are both English (mainly in the first albums) and German (in later albums).

history

The species quickly gained a larger audience. At the beginning of 1987, Andreas Seyffert ( keyboard ), a fifth band member, joined Die Art and worked on the first tape Would You Mind Us Looking For? with, but then left the band again. At the end of 1987 the radio station DT64 recorded the 2nd Parocktikum session with Die Art, which was later released as the 2nd tape Just Another Hit . In the absence of the possibility of producing their own album, Die Art released four tapes ( MC ) in their own production by 1989 , of which Dry became the most famous and best-selling underground tape in the GDR.

In 1989 the song Sie Said made it onto the first Parocktikum LP . Another highlight was the performance at the last FDJ Whitsun meeting in 1989 in front of 10,000 spectators.

In the late summer of 1989 the drummer Thomas Stephan left Die Art and the GDR. Dirk Scholz strengthened the band as an equal replacement. A first record deal with the Amiga label failed in 1989 because of the song Wide Wide World , which was interpreted as a call to flee from the GDR .

After the turning point and the peaceful revolution in 1990, the debut album Fear was released on the Amiga -VEB Deutsche Schallplatten-successor label called "ZONG" and that with the song Wide Wide World . In 1991 the 2nd album Gold followed ("My Color Is Black", "Heer Litz" and many others) In contrast to the first two albums, which sounded very punky, the 3rd album Gift (1993) was a pop / wave album. Due to this musical style break, the album was initially reluctant to sell.

The 4th album But (1994) was again significantly heavier and is considered one of the best and most balanced albums. In 1995, the band decided to record their best German-language tracks written before 1990 on an album. The ship was created. The album Still (1996) is the 2nd purely German-language album. In 1997 the experimental album Adnama followed, including a decoupled maxi CD Radiokrieg . The title track is a cover of an Amanda Lear song, which explains the album name. Cellist Susanne V. Thiele played on the "almost unplugged" album Mellow Versions from 1998 and on the subsequent club tour . On this quiet album, the dark voice of the singer Makarios comes to the fore more clearly than usual. A novelty in German rock culture was the use of various church houses that were still active on this tour.

In 1999, Die Art separated from Christoph Heinemann and in 2000 recorded the last studio album Last with Christian Schierwagen ( e-bass ) , which is again a bit more guitar-heavy and melodic. Together with Conrad Hoffmann (bass), Die Art went on tour for the last time and broke up on December 22nd, 2001 after their concert in the Moritzbastei in Leipzig .

Only once did they make an exception on April 17, 2004 and played “Gare de la Lune” in the traditional Dresden Ballhaus together with friends of the Italian opera who had not performed for 12 years on the occasion of the 40th birthday of singer RJKK Hänsch alias Ray van Zeschau .

Wissmut was founded as a follow-up project , with Makarios , Thomas Gumprecht , Conrad Hoffmann and Shiva Rudra as drummers.

In February 2007 the reunion of the band was announced. This was followed by the first appearance on April 28th in the Chemnitz Südbahnhof together with Substance of Dream as the opening act and Fliehende Stürme as the headliner. Shortly thereafter, in March 2007, the album "Pale" was released with rare tracks, demos and unreleased versions, which is only available on request. The new album “Alles Was dein Herz desires” was released on October 5th. After several successful concerts and a long summer break, the album "Funeral Entertainment" was released in October 2008. This includes six new songs and a new recording of the 1991 but unreleased song "Pale". That song also gives the musical direction of the songs, which are now completely in English. This can be called Wavepop and is linked to the band phase of 1992 and 1993.

In September 2009 the band's first best of compilation was released. It is called "Forever and Eternal" and contains only songs with German lyrics. Three new tracks were recorded, but two new songs were also released.

With “Twenty Fear” the second best of compilation was released in October 2010, which exclusively contains English songs from 1990 to 2000. As a bonus CD, the band's first album called "Fear" will be released completely remastered. In 2011 and 2014 the regular studio albums "Arcane" and "Success" followed. In 2011 and 2017, live recordings from Berlin and Dresden will also be published.

With the separation from drummer Sven Löbert in August 2017, the band was about to break up. In October 2017, however, a replacement was found in Jens Halbauer (also a member of Scorched Earth and Fleeing Storms ) and the band's activities, including live performances, continued. In April 2019, the songs "Enter the Sun" and "Neue Eisbox" premiered live in Dresden, with both titles later appearing on a single single together with Himmel aus Velvet . In September 2019, Die Zucht met again for a concert for the first time, and a corresponding sound carrier was also announced.

In spring 2020 a mini-tour should take place together with the friends of the Italian opera . However, this fell victim to the COVID-19 pandemic and was postponed to 2021. With the 12-inch vinyl picture disc Brüder, zur Sonne, zur Freiheit , the first product of the joint collaboration with two new titles from Die Art and FDIO was released at the originally planned tour date.
