Sandown Fort is an artillery fort in Sandown on Sandown Bay on the Isle of Wight, England . It is one of the many Palmerston forts that were built on the island to fend off a feared French invasion. Construction of the fort began in April 1861 and ended in September 1864. The cost of construction was £ 73,876. In later documents, the castle is often referred to as the Granite Fort because it was built from granite . Today the castle is owned by the Isle of Wight Zoo.
